SENshine Looking After Animals: Step Inside the World of a Vet – Module 3 A substantial, approximately 70-page, full-colour practical animal care workbook for learners aged 11+. Created by veterinary surgeon Amy Woodhouse BVetMed MRCVS, this engaging workbook takes learners inside the world of veterinary care through realistic animal cases, practical activities and guided clinical thinking. Learners work through three detailed sections: examining a dog, examining a horse and animal first aid. They observe, investigate, record findings, make decisions and create their own professional-style animal-care resources. Part 1: Examining a Dog Learners follow Sam the Collie through a veterinary consultation. They take a case history, explore consultation-room equipment, complete a top-to-tail examination and learn about temperature, pulse and respiration. They also investigate canine anatomy, the skeleton and paw structure before using Sam’s symptoms to consider what may be wrong and how he could be treated. The section ends with a vet student pocket-guide project. Part 2: Examining a Horse Learners meet Star and investigate a painful eye condition. They prepare for a stable visit, explore safe examination techniques and learn about equine anatomy, digestion, teeth, hooves and vital signs. They discover how a horse’s eyes, ears, heart and lungs are examined, including the use of an ophthalmoscope and fluorescein testing, before planning a treatment approach and creating a final presentation, poster or video. Part 3: Animal First Aid Learners explore first aid kits, emergency preparation, heatstroke, stings, bites, allergic reactions, ticks, Lyme disease and safe tick removal. They then create an animal first aid information leaflet.
